Great Blue Herons Eggs to Hatch on Webcam in a Month!

A great blue heron couple residing on an oak tree on Cornell University campus look like they’re read to fledge several young herons this year. The oak tree is in the middle of the university’s Sapsucker Woods pond, providing an idea place for the herons to catch fish and frogs.

The couple have made the oak tree their home since 2009, with them managing to raise hatch and fledge four young herons every year since.

One of the herons cleans themselves -- an essential task when you live in the middle of a pond!

The first egg this year was laid on 28 March. It is expected that a new egg will be laid every two or three days. The herons will incubate the eggs for 25 to 30 days, before they start hatching. Herons take 2 to 5 days to hatch! And then it will be another seven weeks before the young herons leave the nest.
